Sport Matt: I will always get a BUZZ from my time at Wasps

MATT Symons said he would ‘always cherish the memories’ of his time at Wasps after his move to Harlequins was confirmed.

The second row suffered an injury-hit 2017/18 campaign at Wasps and it was announced last month he would not be retained.

Symons’ next destinatio­n was this week confirmed as Wasps’ Aviva Premiershi­p rivals, Harlequins.

“I am hugely excited about signing for Harlequins and cannot wait to get down to The Stoop and join up with the squad,” said Symons.

“I’d like to thank Wasps and the fans for the opportunit­y and the support they showed me during my time at the club, I will always cherish the memories from my time there.

“It is an exciting time to be joining Harlequins, as I know there is huge ambition to take the Club back to the top of the English and European game and I hope to contribute to that next season.”

Symons made just three starts for Wasps this sea- Matt Symons suffered an injury-hit season son with the last coming way back in November.

Wasps bolstered their second-row options with the signing of Charlie Matthews from Harlequins last week.

He will compete with Joe Launchbury, Kearnan Myall, James Gaskell, Will Rowlands and Marcus Garratt in the lock department.

Meanwwhile, six more players have joined Wasps’ senior academy for the 2018/19 campaign:

A product of Henley AASE College, coached there by Jack Wiggins, the centre has already appeared twice in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. He is this season’s WASP under 18 award winner.

Second row joins from Nottingham where he gained Championsh­ip experience. Regularly guested for Wasps in the A League and AngloWelsh Cup. The pacy Stowe School and Wasps under 18s winger joins the club on a student contract having impressed as a guest in the A League and debuting Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Curran has already appeared in Wasps’ back-row in the A League while part of Warwick School’s trophy-winning U18 squad.

A product of Henley AASE and Wasps under 18s, Simonds who plays at centre or full back has also been capped by England U18s this season.

The Wellington College centre, who impressed in the AngloWelsh Cup this season as a member of Wasps under 18’s, toured South Africa with England U18’s last summer in addition to playing in the Spring Internatio­nals.

The six new signings join the following players in the senior academy next year: Owain James (full-back), David Langley (prop), Gaby Oghre (hooker), Will Porter (scrum-half ), James Seabrook (back row – student contract), George Thornton (prop), Joe Tunney (second row – student contract), Jacob Umaga (fly-half ), Tom Willis (back row).
