LORRY HITS BRIDGE AGAIN

CARS DIVERTED OFF A5 CAUSING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC CHAOS

MOTORISTS were diverted off the A5 yesterday morning after a lorry hit a bridge - again.

The A5 was closed in both directions near Hinckley and Nuneaton after a lorry struck the railway bridge near Dodwells roundabout.

A diversion was in place via the B4666 Coventry Road and Nutts Lane, which caused queues of traffic during rush hour on the surrounding roads.

The same bridge was hit by a lorry, which shed its load of mayonnaise and beer onto the road, around nine weeks ago .

It is notorious for causing problems for motorists and has had to undergo repair for lorry damage in the past.

Highways England tweeted shortly after 8am yesterday to report that the road had been reopened. It said: “A5 is now open in both directions, near Hinckley and Nuneaton, following an earlier collision. Slight delays remain on the approach.”

On Saturday May 26, another notorious bridge in Nuneaton was hit by a lorry.

The lorry became completely wedged underneath the Hinckley Road bridge and the cab had twisted onto two wheels. The road had to be closed for several hours while police dealt with the incident.

Last October, the government announced that funding for a project to get rid of the disused railway bridge had been successful.

The Department for Transport will provide £2.84million for a traffic busting scheme on the A47 Hinckley Road, which includes demolishing the disused bridge.
