Saddened by news of legend’s passing

-

I WAS saddened by the news of Harry Walker’s passing at the grand old age of 103.

He was a truly great Coventrian, Cov RFC legend and the oldest surviving England international rugby player at the time of his death.

It is no surprise that the warm tributes poured in from the world of rugby including from Bill Beaumont.

Even at his great age, Harry was still a familiar figure at the Butts Park Arena cheering on his beloved blue and white.

Our club will not be quite the same from now on due to his passing. Rest in peace Harry. Paul Sheehan Coventry

Green and pleasant city centre all gone

I WAS looking at the 1984 picture of the carnival procession (Remember When, Jun 6).

Just look what a lovely green and pleasant area with trees.

Compare it to what we have now, a bleak, windswept, grey slabbed nothingness with a couple of benches in far flung corners.

Oh! I forgot it cannot be seen from the council chambers, all the greenery has been moved round the corner to High St/Union St, where it can be seen by the high and mighty! K J Clarke

Leave the EU for freedom

TWO hundred years ago, as the world developed, a nation’s first choice was to gain freedom for its people. The next step was to fight for democracy. This was the great prize to achieve. Trade was an addition to pay for extra freedoms.

Great Britain was the first European state to achieve full democratic statehood in 1783 and then fought three international wars to maintain it. Thousands from the Commonwealth and Great Britain have given their lives to preserve our democratic freedom, which was then delivered into the hands of incompetent European bureaucrats by our shortsighted, negligent politicians.

Now the public has been deluged by trivia when the whole point of Brexit is to recover our freedom and democracy. We should walk out and rely on the longstanding trust and support of the Commonwealth. P Wilson Nuneaton

Lack of parking to blame for closures

WHAT was most obvious to me watching TV reports of the fall of the House of Fraser was that most of their stores are in pedestrianised streets with no parking.

I haven’t shopped in my local department store in over 25 years due to the impossibility of getting my car within several hundred yards of the front door – preferring to frequent out-of-town malls.

It must be nice for the anti-car lobby to smugly walk and cycle past the shuttered shops of our high streets, the death of which are largely due to their efforts. John Eoin Douglas Edinburgh
