FOOD BANK HAS TO USE OWN FUNDS TO FEED HUNGRY

PLEA FOR COLLECTION VOLUNTEERS

CASH-STRAPPED food bank volunteers have had to dip into their limited bank account to ensure all those that need food in Nuneaton do not go hungry.

The shock statement has been made by Nuneaton Food bank as it has given out half a ton more food that has come into the warehouse over recent weeks.

David Stanier, chair of Nuneaton Food bank management committee, said: “We are aware that many of our regular donors have been away, and that there has also been another bank holiday when the warehouse isn’t open to receive donations.

“However, we felt that we should alert people to the fact that we have been having to purchase a large quantity of food from within our limited resources, just to make up the requisitions from our four centres.”

With that in mind, Nuneaton Food bank and Bedworth Food bank have joined forces to host another weekend collection at the Tesco store in Bedworth .

Volunteers are needed to help collect donations during the weekend of Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30.

“At the last national collection at the end of November, working with Bedworth Foodbank at Bedworth Tesco, with your help and kind support, we collected well over 1.94 tons of food, which was a tremendous help to us in meeting the increasing need,” Mr Stanier said.

“As our regular teams of volunteers will all be working at our food distribution centres on Friday, we have two regular sessions taking place on Fridays, we really need a large number of volunteers to help us over these two days, and would greatly appreciate your help for one or two hours especially in the afternoons.

“We would really welcome some ‘one-off’ help from people who aren’t volunteers on a regular basis, to support the core team of volunteers. We will arrange a short briefing beforehand, especially for people who have not done this before.”

To find out more about volunteering at the event, people should email nfbcollections@gmail.com

Those who cannot make it along to the event, or people who want to make a donation to Nuneaton Food bank should note that collection points can be found at Asda, Sainbury’s, the Co-op in Attleborough, the Co-op in Bulkington, Yorkshire Bank, the Town Hall in Nuneaton , Cafe Neo, Nuffield Health and local churches.
