Plea for extra park cash

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter claire.harrison@reachplc.com

We spent £11,000 on the general stuff in Riversley Park and £22,000 in the Miners Welfare Park so I do think we need to have a look at what we are spending Cllr Keith Kondakor

NUNEATON’S premier park is in dire need of having some cash spent on it and some ‘TLC’ as it prepares to host some huge events.

That’s the view of Nuneaton and Bedworth’s Green councillor, who has asked the authority to look into spending money on Riversley Park.

And the cabinet member responsible for parks, Cllr Ian Lloyd, has agreed, with a review now planned.

Having had just £11,000 spent on it compared to the £22,000 on neighbouring Miners Welfare Park in Bedworth, Cllr Keith Kondakor says Riversley Park is in need of some attention.

He has implored Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council cabinet members to look at the park, particularly with some big events around the corner - such as the 200th anniversary of George Eliot ‘s birthday next year.

During a discussion about the Town Hall’s finances, he said: “I do hope you have a bit of TLC for Riversley Park because looking at the accounts, we are doing a lot of stuff in the Miners Welfare Park, a couple of years ago we did a lot in Bailey Park and I know it always causes trouble when I talk about Nuneaton vs Bedworth but Riversley Park is looking very tired and we waste a lot of money on uplighters but we haven’t done a lot to tidy up the park. “We spent £11,000 on the general stuff in Riversley Park and £22,000 in the Miners Welfare Park so I do think we need to have a look at what we are spending on Riversley Park particularly with all of the things coming up, the City of Culture overspills and the bi-centenary of George Eliot , we need to tidy things up a bit and look at the budget and see if we are spending enough on Riversley Park.”

Town Hall leader, Cllr Julie Jackson said to Cllr Ian Lloyd, cabinet member responsible for parks: “In regards to Riversley Park, obviously we want all of our parks to be the best they can be, can I ask that you look at that and review the spend in that destination park.”

This was agreed by Cllr Lloyd and a review is to now get under way.
