Pollution should be a concern for us all
COUNCILLOR Mayer continues his quest for Uber to be granted a licence in the city.
He cites pollution as a concern. He says Uber vehicles are the answer. What does he mean?
Uber drivers pay a substantial amount of their takings to Uber. I suggest this may force them to operate much older and more polluting vehicles.
Black cab operators keep more of their profits so can invest in newer, cleaner vehicles – including the new electric vehicles made here in Coventry.
Many of us may never take a taxi, so may stand aside from the debate. But all of us breathe – so Councillor Mayer, Uber is a bad deal for every one. Richard Williams Holbrooks
No such thing as a perfect politician
ANDY McDonald appears to have established himself as your resident left-wing columnist via his very frequent letters to your newspaper. I am sure that all of your readers are left in no doubt as to his views on the politics of today. Having spent many months lambasting Theresa May’s Conservative government, he has now turned his attention to Donald Trump (Jul 2). I would be the first to admit that Donald Trump has many faults, as does Theresa May. But Mr Trump, despite his faults, displays strong leadership – which Mrs May lacks. However, she does have compassion and she doesn’t make snap decisions. I think she should be praised for that but it is not helping her with the Brexit negotiations.
Brexit needs strong leadership which she lacks. Maybe she and Mr Trump should change places. She would be much more compassionate to US migrants and Mr Trump would be much more forceful and effective in Brexit negotiations.
The fact is that none of our politicians are perfect but the one thing that I do know is that Jeremy Corbyn, who I believe Andy McDonald champions, would be ineffective in both roles. He swings in the wind and changes his mind on most issues on an almost daily basis. We don’t know where he stands on any issue, and seems so focused on power that he will do almost anything to achieve it.
He is more of an ‘operator’ than a politician, changing his tack continuously with only one thing in mind – the keys to Downing Street. Nobody really knows what he will do if he gets into power, and he likes it that way. He doesn’t have to explain, and if he gets in he might do everything that Andy McDonald wants him to do – or he might not. I think that his thirst for power may be all he has to offer.
