COMPASSIONATE shoppers donated almost two TONNES of food in just two days to help Nuneaton and Bedworth foodbanks keep supporting those who need them most.

They showed huge generosity during the two-day collection at Tesco in Bedworth .

“The total amount of food kindly donated over the two days was 1808.16kgs which is 1.78 tonnes,” said a delighted David Stanier, chair of Nuneaton Foodbank management committee.

“We are really so very grateful to all the generous shoppers who kindly donated food for those in need in Nuneaton and Bedworth , and to all the volunteers without whose help and support this collection could not have taken place.

“We have shared the donated food with Bedworth Foodbank, and they have received 602.72kgs of food, and we have received 1205.44kgs of food.”

He went on: “We are indebted to Steve Huggard, the manager of Tesco Bedworth , and to Christine, the community champion, and to Raj, the customer services manager, for enabling this collection to take place, and to all of the staff for their help and support. Also to all of the volunteers who helped over the two days.”

As a result of the huge collection, and despite the fact that Nuneaton Foodbank has helped 209 people, 64 of which were children in the past month, the foodbank gave out less food than it had in its stores.

But the demand is there, week in, week out, and currently the foodbank needs UHT milk, puddings, tinned meat, meatballs, fruit juice, squash, rice puddings, custard and small jars of coffee.

The team also needs volunteers to help support the four centres, which give access five days a week to emergency food parcels for those in need.

“We are always grateful for the help of volunteers, and there are a number of different jobs that need to be done in order to enable the Nuneaton Foodbank to operate efficiently,” he added.

Those who would like to volunteer some of their time and help Nuneaton Foodbank should email nfbvolunteers@gmail.com

Donations can be made at collection points at Asda, Sainsbury’s, Attleborough Co-op, Bulkington Co-op, Yorkshire Bank, the Town Hall in Nuneaton , Caffe Nero, Nuffield Health Gym and churches.
