Sad Stokes in farewell to supporters

-

CHRIS Stokes has sent a heartfelt farewell message to Coventry City fans.

The popular defender this week completed a move to League Two Bury, joining the Shakers on a free transfer after being allowed to leave with a year still to run on his contract.

The 27-year-old left-back was made available for transfer this summer after becoming surplus to manager Mark Robins’s plans after the club gained promotion. Stokes was part of that success, and also helped City win the Checkatrade Trophy in 2017, and earned great respect from fans for his effort whenever he pulled on the shirt.

However, Robins has overhauled the left-back position this summer, also getting rid of Ryan Haynes who was sold to Shrewsbury Town, and drafting in Junior Brown from the Shrews.

He’s also added Brandon Mason who was released by Watford, as well as promising teenager Sam McCallum from non-league Herne Bay FC.

Stokes, who has moved to Gigg Lane on a two year deal, said: “Thanks to everyone at Coventry for a brilliant three and a half years.

“I’ve had a fantastic time at the club and I couldn’t have asked for a better way for it to end than to be at Wembley winning promotion.

“I hope the club goes on and has much more success in the future.

“I’m sad that I won’t be part of it any more but that’s football and I have got to do what’s best for my career.”
