DRIVERS were stuck in massive queues heading into Coventry as the A45 was unexpectedly closed yesterday morning.

The major route into the city wasclosed eastbound between Allesley Park roundabout and Broad Lane, and traffic was being diverted down the A4114 Birmingham Road.

Queues stretched back six miles as commuters tried to make their way into the city for work.

It also caused queues to spread onto Allesley Old Road and Holyhead Road as people tried to avoid the closure.

The closure was caused by a burst water main.

Severn Trent closed the section of the road early yesterday morning, and also coned off one lane heading towards the closure to manage traffic.

A spokesman for the utility firm said: “We’d like to apologise to those people who’ve been affected by the burst water pipe on the A45, Dunchurch, near the junction of Brookside Avenue.

“We’ve now repaired the pipe but as we work to get everything back to normal part of the road will remain closed to keep everybody safe.”

The statement added that the road was likely to reopen yesterday afternoon.

The spokesman added: “We plan to reopen it this afternoon.

“Again we’d like to say sorry and thank everybody for their patience.”
