Well, not quite – they’ll be carried up to a high-altitude by a Boeing 747 before they’re set free and sent on their way into space carrying very expensive satellites.

Still, it’s all very exciting – especially as it’s part of a whole new space initiative the UK is undertaking over the next few years.

Virgin Orbit, a spin-off of Virgin Galactic the space-tourism venture and carries small satellites into space, plans to move some launches from California to Cornwall.

And the UK Space Agency has just revealed plans to build a rocket launch site at Sutherland on the north coast of Scotland to get into the lucrative business of launching satellites, which, they say, could add around £4bn to the UK economy over the next 10 years.

A number of other sites for spaceports are also being investigated.
