CHILDREN AGED FIVE CAUGHT PLAYING AT QUARRY

- > CLAIRE HARRISON REPORTS

LIVES are being put at risk as children as young as five were caught playing at a Nuneaton quarry.

Reports suggest that a group of around 40 youngsters, aged from five to 18, were caught playing at the dangerous Judkins quarry.

It has caused huge alarm in the community and chiefs at Nuneaton Police Station have issued a warning to children to stay away as well as plea to parents to make sure they know where their children are.

It is not only dangerous but illegal as it is trespassing,” said a spokesperson for Warwickshire Police.

FCC Environment, which runs the site, has also joined the plea for people not to play anywhere near the site.

Julie Fourcade, head of external affairs for FCC Environment, said: “The warm weather often sees people, especially children, attempt to access sites like Judkins, falsely believing that the area is safe to play in.

“We encourage parents and carers to warn their children about the hazards of playing and swimming in unsupervised areas such as this.

“It is also important that people are aware that trespassing onto private land is against the law. When incidents occur, we work closely with the police, and anyone seen intruding on our sites will be photographed and any vehicle details recorded with a view to prosecution.”

The joint plea is all the more important following the tragic death of a teenager in the south of Warwickshire only a matter of weeks ago.

Luke Murphy sadly lost his life after entering the Blue Lagoon in Bishops Itchington on Thursday, July 26.

The borough has also suffered loss closer to home after Jay Harris, aged 18, sadly lost his life after losing his footing at Jees and Boon quarry in Hartshill, which is close to Judkins, on 2009.
