Great Lakes festival win for Nathan

NATHAN Lawson had some great wins in the Lakes 5 Days competitio­n, staged around the Lake District at Silver How, Angle Tarn Pikes, Whinlatter, Askham Fell and Dale Park.

The popular festival is held every four years and attracts thousands of competitor­s from all over the UK and Europe.

Nathan was the fastest overall on the M21 long courses having accumulate­d the best four scores out of five in his age category, including three first places.

His score of 5,510 points was nearly 200 clear of second placed Richard Robinson.

Lesley Ross was sixth overall on the W50 long courses and had two first places, while Anne Straube (W40) had two first places and a fourth to finish 11th overall as she did not have a fourth race result.

Hilary Simpson was eighth overall on the W75 long courses, while Margaret Willdig was 14th overall on the W65 long course with a ninth place on day two.

Junior captain Sam Leadley was 18th overall having finished all five M18 long courses, his first multi-day event.

On the short courses, Lewis Oxtoby (M14) was seventh, Jacob Oxtoby (M16) third, Aleksandrs Ivanovs (M35) seventh, Chris McCartney (M45) fourth, and Carolyn Marr and Thelma Spelton (both W70) second and sixth respective­ly.

On the rest day, an urban race around Ulverston attracted hundreds of competitor­s. On the longest course, Black 8.3km, Sam Leadley was third M18 taking 54.39mins and Lesley Ross was seventh in 5.3km on the Blue 5.3km Women’s course.

The next race takes place at Memorial Park, Coventry, on Wednesday, August 15, with starts from 6pm until 7.30pm. There’s no need to pre-book. Courses will range from 2km for beginners up to 5km for experience­d orienteers.
