TWO police officers have been taken to hospital after their car crashed while responding to an emergency.

The collision occurred on the junction of Binley Road and Allard Way, in Binley, shortly after 11am yesterday.

Photographs taken at the scene show the smashed police car in the middle of the junction with a missing passenger door and sever damage to the front end.

The other vehicle involved appears to be a black Jaguar with the bonnet in the air, as well as dents all along the driver’s side and two flat tyres.

The driver of the police car suffered minor injuries and two officers were taken to hospital after being freed from the vehicle by firefighters.

The busy junction remains closed while officers wait for the council to provide sand to cover up an oil spill on the road.

Police officers have spent the afternoon redirecting traffic off Allard Way.

Traffic coming off Hipswell Highway can only turn left on to Binley Road or go straight on -– motorists cannot turn on to the city-bound stretch of Binley Road.

Both vehicles were eventually recovered at around 1pm. The diversion seemed to confuse drivers much to the annoyance of police – one even ended up driving the wrong way down the road according to our reporter Ben who was at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “Officers responding to an emergency incident have collided with a car on Binley Road, Coventry just after 11am on Wednesday morning.
