A46 road surface ‘absolute disgrace’

-

SECTIONS of the A46 road between the A45 and the M40 motorway are an absolute disgrace.

Whoever is responsible for the maintenance of the surface should be ashamed of themselves. It is more like a third world country.

Parts of the dual carriageway were attended to earlier this year but this only highlights the sections left unattended. Michael Heath Leamington

Make pair pay for cathedral stunt

THANKFULLY the rescue of the pair of drunks after climbing the walls of Coventry Cathedral was carried out safely.

West Midlands Police states that there would be no further action taken against the pair.

Surely they should be made to cover the cost of the firefighters, the equipment used and the attendance of paramedics?

This would be greater than the cost of a ‘few pints’. Mick Cummins Kenilworth

Reality of plans for Allesley Park

RE: ‘A new lease of park life’ (Aug 20). Allesley Park and the walled garden were not bought by the council – they were an amazingly generous gift from Lord Iliffe to the citizens of Coventry. One of his conditions was that there must be no new buildings. If you look at the planning application you’ll see that the proposed ‘pavilion’ is actually a steel shed, which would mainly be used as a store.

It seems unlikely that such a building could give a new lease of life to the park. Dr David Sheppard Friends of Allesley Park

Denying democratic will of the people

RE: ‘Second referendum is the way forward’ (Aug 21). Hopefully it was just an innocent faux pas and not a case of fake news. I refer to Tuesday’s paper when Robert Wheway was refered to as a ‘Lib Dem councillor’ in the sub-heading when sharing his words of wisdom on a second referendum.

True, Robert was a Lib Dem councillor, but that was way back in 1985 – over 33 years ago.

Robert has a problem with the democratic will of the people and wants a second referendum. He claims that given the chance Brexiteers would now vote to remain. His theory is based on analysis from the Best for Britain movement that was jointly commissioned by Hope not Hate, who have their own agenda.

Robert obviously still has ideas of grandeur and believes he and his party still have some credibility. He seems to have forgotten the doomed farcical Con/Lib Dem coalition that ended in tears. And Robert’s election bid last May in the local elections speaks volumes as he came last. Brian Nathan-Partridge Stivichall

Missed opportunity for market’s 60th

WHAT a shame that the Coventry Market, which is 60 years old this year, has no special discounts to get people excited enough to purchase goodies as this very special venue. Ian Harris Radford
