PUT YOUR NAME DOWN AND KEEP OUR COASTLINES BEACHY CLEAN

-

YOU and your family can be part of the latest campaign against the perils of plastic by signing up to the biggest ever UK-wide beach litter pick!

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is on the hunt for thousands of volunteers to clean up the nation’s beaches as part of its 25th anniversary Great British Beach Clean.

It promises a great day out for people who love, or live near to, the coast – and a great result for wildlife and the beach too!

The Great British Beach Clean takes place from September 14-17 and not only helps to spruce up hundreds of beaches but, because volunteers record the litter they find, can also create change.

Changes already made as a result of evidence gathered over years of MCS beach cleans include the 5p carrier bag charge, a ban on microbeads in wash-off products and the banning of lantern and balloon releases.

Last year’s Great British Beach Clean saw almost 7,000 volunteers pick up 718 bits of rubbish from every 100 metres cleaned.

Lizzie Prior, MCS beach and river clean project officer, says: “Taking part really can make a difference. Each beach has a co-ordinator who explains how to fill in a simple data form, and then it’s just a case of grabbing a litter picker and bin bag and filling it up with rubbish! “If you can’t find a beach clean near you, you can organise one. “Beach litter is a serious problem – but the solution is in our hands.” Join the Great British Beach Clean and sign up at mcsuk.org/ great british beach clean or call 01989 566017.
