Jodi sits out Under-23s with strain

-

JODI Jones was conspicuous by his absence from Coventry City’s Under-23s, the player having played in the previous two development fixtures as he continues his comeback from long-term injury.

The 20-year-old failed to make Jason Farndon’s 18-man squad for the game against Sheffield Wednesday, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Alan Higgs Centre.

“He’s had a bit of a reaction to his thigh,” revealed Farndon, speaking after the match in which Reise Allassani and Amadou Bakayoko scored, although Abu Ogogo also got on the scoresheet, unfortunately at the wrong end. “He came off at half-time at Bolton last week and that wasn’t planned.

“It’s nothing too major but he just needs to get a little bit more running in.

“It’s not a setback but just part of the process with him.

“We have got a few like it who have suffered knock-on strains and things.

“Abu and Junior (Brown) have both come back from big injuries and it’s not the injury that hurts, its the other things as you try to get yourself back playing.”

New signing Conor Chaplin was one of several first teamers to be given a game on a day which bore similarities to Saturday’s frustrating defeat to Rochdale, with plenty of possession and chances but not enough to show for it.

“Conor’s not played for ages, and I think he was a bit too eager to score today,” said Farndon, of the player who hit the woodwork on one occasion.

“He was snatching at things but he obviously looks like he’s a real goal threat.”

He added: “What we’re trying to do with the first team, and what we tried to do today was dominate the ball, be creative and playing enjoyable football.

“But obviously just not ruthless enough. Scoring is the hardest part of the game. We’d be concerned if we weren’t creating the chances. But, again, it’s left us frustrated.”

City took the lead through an impressive 20-yard strike from Allassani before an Ogogo own goal pulled the Owls level. Bakayoko then restored the lead from a Brown cross before Wednesday equalised late on through Fraser Preston.
