Fond memories of the thriving Rialto

-

All-electric taxis will be wonderful

RE: Rialto memories (Aug 30), I remember the Rialto as a thriving busy and popular venue for bingo.

People obviously went for the bingo but also to socialise with friends or strangers. It was the 1960s so the air was filled with cigarette smoke, alcohol and the occasional bad language.

My parents Betty and Jim Bacon were the bar managers in the lounge area, and it was always busy for them and also the other staff – Fred, Nellie, Alice, Lily and I think Margaret and Marie were the small cafe adjoining the bar. Myself and my sister Susan also worked there for a while.

The managers were Reg Elliot and Mr Fountaine.

Praise for school’s former head teacher

AS a governor of Tiverton School until last month, I was pleased to read the article (Sep 6) about the new school. However I was disappointed that there was no mention made of Carolyn Claridge, the previous head teacher. Many people contributed to the development of the new building, but she was the ‘captain’ who demonstrated inspiration, passion and immense determination to bring about Tiverton as it is today. Carolyn deserves every accolade and the new school is testimony to her labours. David Spurgeon Coventry IT will be wonderful when eventually we get taxis that are all electric. It will be a great moment when the process is complete. Ian Harris Radford

Our enjoyable time as projectionists

IT was nice to read your write up of one Theatre One cinema (Remember When, Aug 11), as me and my brother were both cinema projectionists from 1960/62.

Until 1976 we worked for Denton Cinema Company who owned four cinemas, the Paris-Lyric, Ritz and the Standard (later Godiva).

We both enjoyed our time working for Mr and Mrs Dent who owned the company and made many friends along the way. Ron Thompson Radford
