Burge warns: We can’t get carried away

-

LEE Burge believes Saturday’s hugely encouraging victory over third-place Barnsley proves what a good side Coventry City are in League One.

But the Sky Blues goalkeeper insists the players can’t afford to get carried away with the likes of promotion favourites Sunderland and table-topping Portsmouth next up at the Ricoh Arena.

Mark Robins’ men travel to struggling Bristol Rovers before that, looking to record their third straight win in the division.

“To get two wins on the bounce is really good, especially against Barnsley who are definitely going to be up there this year,” said Burge, who more than played his part in the 1-0 victory with a number of impressive saves to keep City in the game.

“It was a really good test and we dug in well and showed that we are a very good team.”

The 25-year-old keeper says City are finally starting to gel and showing plenty of good signs for the season ahead.

“Everyone had a part to play, and they played it superbly,” he said. “It’s great to keep a clean sheet and win and hopefully we can do the same next week.”

He added: “I thought we dealt with everything that they threw at us.”

Centre-half Jordan Willis scored the all important goal that separated the two sides, heading home bravely in the 80th minute.

And Burge always believed that the Sky Blues were in with a chance of snatching all three points as the game went on.

“We always knew that if we got to 20 minutes left in the game at 0-0 we had a chance of nicking it and keeping the clean sheet,” said the keeper

Burge, meanwhile, is convinced that things are coming together nicely thanks, in no short measure, to Conor Chaplin’s arrival.

“Conor has come in and he’s been a big help over the last two games,” he said of the striker, who sealed City’s three points at Oxford when he scored from the spot and earned positive reviews and the official man of the match award on Saturday.

“Everyone seems to be gelling together.”

But Burge warned: “We have to keep our feet on the ground because we know we are in for a tough test, especially over the next couple of weeks.”
