A HUGE tree branch fell onto a car and went through the windscreen as high winds pummelled the region during Storm Ali.

All emergency services were called to the junction of Deedmore Road and Shilton Lane which saw two people taken to hospital on Wednesday.

Dramatic pictures posted by Binley fire station showed the narrow escape for the occupants who dodged serious injury.

A man and woman were taken to hospital - but by some miracle suffered only minor injuries.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called by police just before 2pm to reports of a large branch that had landed on a car.

“Two ambulances were on scene and taken two patients to hospital.

“A man suffered neck pain and immobilised as a precaution and given pain relief.

“A woman was also immobilised as well with a suspected neck injury.”

West Midlands Fire Service sent ten firefighters to the scene.

The woman involved in the incident was helped from her car by firefighters.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “We were called at 1.57pm by police.

“It was to reports of a tree falling on a car.

“Two fire engines, which is ten firefighters, went to the scene and released the female from her car. Although she did not need cutting free.”

Storm Ali arrived in Coventry and Warwickshire and caused chaos.

Trees were brought down across the city and county.

Warwickshire Police had a high volume of calls with many of them weather and wind related.

The county’s fire and rescue service also confirmed it received several calls.

Main roads in and out of Coventry and Warwickshire were also pummelled by the winds. Gipsy Lane, Spruce Lane and Bulkington Lane in Nuneaton and Shilton Lane in Coventry were affected. It wasn’t just the roads that were hit. Trains between Leamington and Coventry were replaced by road transport due to a fallen tree blocking the railway.

Further afield, a huge tree fell in Coleshill. The gigantic tree had been completely uprooted and fell close to nearby houses.
