Man with knife at Godiva Festival spared prison

A YOUNG man has admitted having an 8-inch knife on him at the Godiva Festival.

Police arrested 22-year-old Trevor Nelson while thousands of music fans enjoyed the popular festival at the War Memorial Park on September 1.

Nelson pleaded guilty to having the blade in a public place when he appeared at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court, as well as possessing cannabis.

Nelson, of Jaffrey Road, Erdington, Birmingham, was handed an 18-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months as he has no previous conviction­s.

He was also ordered to carry out 180 hours’ unpaid work and told to pay £185 court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Other cases heard at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court from August 31 to September 5 included:

Aleksandrs Papakuls, 50, of Hilllmorto­n Road, Wood End, admitted drink-driving in Bell Green Road (breath 72, limit 35). He was fined £250, banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £135 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Jason Box, 36, of Bruce Road, Radford, admitted stealing a Segway worth £199 from Aldi and stealing goods worth £109 from Asda. He was handed a six-week prison sentence suspended for a year and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Matthew McCann, 38, of no fixed address, admitted three counts of stealing golf clubs worth at least £549 from American Golf and committing an offence while subject to a community order. He was sent to prison for 26 weeks (24 weeks for new offences and two weeks for original offences including criminal damage, assault and shopliftin­g) and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Samantha McDonagh, 22, of Tintagel Close, Willenhall, admitted stealing bottles of perfume worth £742 from Debenhams. She was give 60 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £185 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Sean McKervey, 35, of Grangemout­h Road, Radford, admitted harassment, sending a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character, committing an offence while subject to a suspended sentence, and failing to answer bail. He was sent to prison for 12 weeks (four weeks for new offences and eight weeks imposed from suspended sentence for assault by beating), handed a restrainin­g order and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

John Fitzgerald, 37, of Sir Henry Parkes Road, Canley, admitted making an indecent image of a child in category A, making 59 indecent images of a child in category C. He was handed a 26-week prison sentence suspended for two years, made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention order, ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years and ordered to pay £185 court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.
