- By DAVID WHINYATES Schools Reporter There is a warm, open and friendly learning environment

PRINCETHORPE College is a Catholic, co-educational, HMC independent day school for around 900 pupils aged 11 to 18 and welcomes members of all faiths.

The college is renowned for the way it looks after its pupils and is characterised by its strong Christian ethos, which underpins everything we do.

The school has a unique history, beautiful surroundings and unequalled character. The atmosphere is warm, open and friendly, but the traditional values of courtesy, discipline, organisation and mutual respect are expected from all pupils, they are not stuffy but know how to behave.

We pursue academic rigour, want our pupils to be enthusiastic about hard work and to play a full part in the broader aspects of school life, whether in sport, art, drama, music, charitable fund-raising, community service, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, or the many other activities which are on offer. We also want them to enjoy their education.

Our aim is simple: to treat every pupil as an individual, supporting them as they grow into mature, confident, resilient and well-rounded young people with a strong set of moral values.

In its last full inspection visit the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) found Princethorpe in tip-top health. The curricular provision across the school was described as “excellent” and the extra-curricular programme rated as “outstanding”. The report praised rapid pace, imaginative use of resources and a wide range of effective teaching methods. The school’s innovative da Vinci programme was singled out for successfully motivating pupils to work independently.

Headmaster Ed Hester said: “The inspectors recognised Princethorpe’s high standards of teaching and learning, our superb staff, wide-ranging extra-curricular programme and exceptional pastoral care. We are up there with the very best schools in the country in providing a first class, allround education whilst caring so well for our pupils.”

The latest school performance league tables released by the Government (2017) place Princethorpe in the top five per cent of schools in England for progress in A-level performance.

This summer (2018), Princethorpe students achieved their best ever academic results, with 34 per cent of all A-levels A* or A and 60 per cent of all grades were A* to B. In addition, more than 90 per cent of leavers were accepted to study at their first choice university or on their chosen apprenticeship scheme, with the remainder also doing exceptionally well and securing their second choice.

The college has also been shortlisted for Student Careers Programme of the Year 2018 as part of the Independent School Parent Magazine’s Independent Schools of the Year Awards.

Planning was submitted in September 2018 for a new 10-laboratory £8million science building. Recent capital expenditure includes a renovated state-of-the-art theatre space and a £4.5million classroom wing, The Limes, which provides a new home for English, modern foreign languages, ICT and academic PE.

The college is holding a Sixth Form open evening on Wednesday, October 17, from 6.30pm to 9pm. Sixth Form Taster Days will be held in December 2018 and January 2019.

Princethorpe College is part of the Princethorpe Foundation, which also comprises Crescent School in Rugby, and Crackley Hall School and Little Crackers Nursery in Kenilworth. To find out more about the Princethorpe Foundation visit www.princethorpe. co.uk.
