Goals were a Dra-heem come true...
RAHEEM Sterling was pleased to have finally ended his long international goalscoring drought.
He said: “It was a beautiful feeling. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get into the box and try to score goals.
“Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it doesn’t but I’m in the position to score goals and I need to keep that going.
“It means a lot to me. It is three years since I last scored and it means a lot in a game like this.”
Sterling also paid tribute to the work of his team-mates.
The Manchester City forward said: “It was a brilliant team performance. I thought we went at them straight from the beginning and we were clinical.
“The other day we missed a few chances but today we started really well and finished the chances we needed to.”
Southgate hailed the performance of the front trio of Sterling, Rashford and Kane.
Southgate said: “We spoke to the forwards to remind them what a threat they are. The three of them were outstanding and caused all sorts of problems all night. They were a tremendous threat.
“Then it was for the rest of the team to provide and be brave enough to play. I thought at times we did that really well. For a young team I thought they put in an incredibly mature performance.”
Southgate believes the victory was up there with some of the best enjoyed by England.
Asked if he could think of many better performances, Southgate told Sky Sports: “It is difficult to in terms of quality and the fact we have come away from home to play a team on such a good run and have been a top team for years.
“I am delighted with what we have done. They should be incredibly proud of their performance.”
