Coventry fire crews battle tyre shop blaze in city

FIRE crews were called to tackle a severe blaze at a tyre shop in Coventry.

The fire service was alerted to the incident at National Tyres and Autocentre on Spon End at the weekend and sent crews from three Coventry stations to the scene.

The steel-framed building has been badly damaged by the fire.

Fire crews also had to cool down acetylene cylinders at the scene which had heated up in the blaze.

The fire is believed to have started accidental­ly.

After receiving the call shortly after 7pm, West Midlands Fire Service confirmed on Twitter that crews were attending the scene. They posted: “Crews from Canley, Coventry and Binley are currently in attendance at a four pump fire at a Tyre Company at Spon End, Coventry.

“Smoke issuing at premises measuring 30m x 15m. “Crews gained access.” The fire service posted an update on Twitter shortly after 6am this morning, in which they confirmed the fire started accidently.

It read: “Update on four pump fire at National Tyre & Autocentre, Coventry.

“Severe fire affecting 15 per cent of steel framed constructe­d building 30m x 15m. Incident also involved low level asbestos and two acetylene cylinders affected by heat from the fire and were cooled down. “Fire was accidental nature.” West Midlands Police was also on scene to offer assistance with traffic management.
