Lord Hain ‘arrogant’

SENIOR lawyers have criticised Lord Hain’s decision to name Sir Philip Green as the businessman at the centre of allegations of harassment and abuse.

Former Cabinet minister Lord Hain used the protection of parliamentary privilege to identify the Arcadia chairman as the individual behind a legal injunction against The Daily Telegraph.

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve QC said Lord Hain’s behaviour had been “clearly arrogant” in deciding he knew better than the courts. STAFF at Salisbury Cathedral wrestled a man wielding a hammer to the ground after he attempted to snatch one of the oldest surviving copies of the Magna Carta.

Wiltshire Police said a 45-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the botched plot at around 4.45pm on Thursday.

Visitors watched in horror as he smashed protective glass casing around the historic document in the Chapter House of the building, leaving holes in the display.

The manuscript, more than 800 years old, was saved from “very serious damage” by a second layer of glass, the Dean of Salisbury said.

The Rev Canon Nicholas Papadopulos said several “courageous” cathedral employees restrained the vandal. They remained with the man for 12 minutes until police arrived, who then arrested him on suspicion of attempted theft, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage.
