Adam the apple of Cov’s eye with dynamic display

- Man-of-the-match Adam Peters in action for Coventry By JOE PEPPER AND TRYSTAN FINOCCHIARO Danny Stewart

ADAM Peters was selected as Coventry’s man-of-the-match following the 20-15 home win over Yorkshire Carnegie.

The 23-year-old flanker put in an outstanding display of work rate and close-quarter tackling to help the blue and whites battle their way to a fourth win in five home starts.

A bitingly cold and persistently damp day created a scrappy, errorfilled game, which the former Rotherham back-rower said his team did well to win.

“This kind of stop start game is frustrating and obviously a few boys took a few big hits and needed treatment,” he said.

“The referee was frequently stopping and starting the game, which doesn’t benefit us.

“We like to get a bit of momentum going, but today we couldn’t really do that.

“So it was about being patient and resetting ourselves, analysing where we were on the pitch, regenerating the ball through lineout and scrum, seeking field position and turning attack into our defence and backing ourselves when necessary.”

Getting the result ahead of a seven-week break in league action was imperative for Coventry who now sit in seventh place in the table, 14 points clear of bottom-placed Carnegie.

And in stark contrast to recent high-scoring encounters, Peters said taking points when the chance arose was key to his team’s most recent success which again came in front of vocal home support.

“The one good chance created in the second half was taken,” he said.

“You don’t get many chances in these slippery conditions so that was crucial.

“Credit to the crowd, week-in week-out, when we play at home they’re outstanding. They bring exactly the energy we need.

“It’s good to go on a break on the back of a win. Yorkshire are fighting for everything at the moment being bottom of the table, but credit to them, they are a good side and they brought it to us today.

“We came out on top which is the important thing. This result is perfect for us going into a few cup games.

“We’d now like to do well in them before our next league fixture in December.”

Coventry are back in action on Bonfire Night for a friendly against Canada, before their Championship Cup campaign gets underway at Doncaster Knights’ Castle Park home on Saturday week.

It took until 40.58 for a second goal to come in the game and it was the away side who doubled their advantage through Mike Hedden.

After Gleason Fournier hit Hedley’s goal pipes for a second time, a third strike came for Cardiff with Layne Ulmer tipping home a high Bryce Reddick shot on 46.58.

Ulmer was on the scoresheet again at 52.30, the puck falling kindly for the Canadian in a mass scramble to finish off the scoring.

Head coach Danny Stewart said: “Tonight was frustrating and it sums up our Challenge Cup campaign and our inability to put the puck in the net in those games.

“As an organisation, we take pride in the competition and it’s a couple of years on the bounce now where we have failed to progress,” he added.

“It’s unfortunate but it’s behind us now and we have to look ahead to Wednesday away against Sheffield Steelers.”
