COVENTRY’S new water park, The Wave, is taking shape with its swirl of water slides hanging from the rafters.

Workmen are busy building the swimming pool after the successful installation of the slides.

The £36.7million water park, built on the former Spire House site in the city centre, will open in Spring 2019.

Nine slides have been put in, including ‘the Navigator’ - a water park version of a roller coaster which has both uphill and downhill drops in a tube - and the Speed Slide, which has a thrilling 20-metre drop.

Each ride will be complemented by light and sound features for ‘an immersive ride experience.’

The building will house a water park with a range of slides, lazy river and wave pool alongside a day spa, 25-metre swimming pool, 120 station gym, dance studio and squash courts.

The whole landscape of the area around the water park has been changed.

Formerly the Spire House site, the entire site has been transformed.

Work is still ongoing for the landscape, but the city council have also produced a video showing the changes made externally.

You can see the foundations being laid, the structure going into place, and an insight as to how many floors it will have.

A wooden base can be seen surrounding the outside of the park at the moment but a metallic blue cladding is set to cover it up shortly.

Original plans also show a swirling ribbon around the outside, a design feature thought to represent the city’s weaving past.

The park has recently been named The Wave, which is in keeping with the design of the building.

At the time of its announcement, Cllr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport, said: “I’m delighted that we can reveal the name of our fantastic water park.

“The Wave is the perfect name and in keeping with the design of the building, which is eye catching and memorable.

“Coventry’s water park, The Wave, is unique – because no other city has this kind of facility in the heart of a city centre, so it seems only right that we have a unique name for it too.”
