COVENTRY has been named as one of the top 10 cities to live and work in Britain.

The city is placed eighth in the Good Growth for Cities Index, ranking it as the best place to live and work in the Midlands.

Coventry scored highly in indicators including secure jobs in the city, good health, adequate income levels, business startups and wealth distribution.

Cllr Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Regeneration, said he is not surprised at Coventry’s standing.

He added: “Coventry is the perfect location for business. It is a young city that prides itself on cultural diversity and supporting innovation and creative talent.

“We are just a short journey from London and we have the infrastructure and the buildings ready to cater for inward investment.

“We are City of Culture in 2021 and our universities are going from strength to strength. It doesn’t shock me when I read that the city is improving.

“Most weeks I meet with local businesses and employees, and see the drive and energy that they bring to the city. It is a great place to live and to work, and visit.”

The study is carried out annually by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and thinktank Demos.

Oxford takes top spot, with Reading, Southampton, Milton Keynes and Bristol rounding off the top five. Elsewhere, Preston was ranked as the most improved city, while Midland neighbours Birmingham was named as the fifth most improving city.
