- By BEN ECCLESTON News Reporter ben.eccleston@reachplc.com

TRIBUTES to Coventry entrepreneur Harry Shaw have been pouring in since the tragic news of his death.

Mr Shaw became one of the most famous names across Coventry and Warwickshire as his name was emblazoned on coaches which carried thousands of people on trips and holidays for over 50 years.

Sadly, he passed away on Friday, November 9, at the age of 87.

The CoventryLive Facebook page has been awash with tributes to Mr Shaw who started the coach company in 1964 and the firm has remained a household name in the city ever since.

Among those paying respects were people who worked for Mr Shaw, those who made cherished memories on holiday organised by the company and even a friend of more than 50 years.

Below we’ve picked out a selection of the touching tributes from our Facebook page:

John Hayward: A gentleman through and through RIP Harry.

Fran Lewis: Harry Shaw was a charming gentleman, always friendly and polite and left us smiling when he came to where I worked.

Carl Christon: The City has lost one of it’s true stalwarts. The family must take pride in all the comments, memories and stories of what a genuinely nice guy Harry was. I’m sure my Dad said he used to work on his milk round years ago, but as a youngster I remember him leaving money in the slot machines for us kids to play with, after he had finished servicing the ones in the GEC club. And then in my Tesco days he used to come into the store at Walsgrave daily, to buy treats for his office staff - most of the time he would stop and chat for 5 minutes. It was an honour to have known him. RIP Harry.

Lisa Terry Weatherall: Had my 1st holiday abroad with Harry Shaw, 24 hrs to the south of France, brilliant service... RIP.

Julie Jones: My dad drove for Harry Shaw at the beginning when he only had a couple of coaches. We use to go with my dad down the yard and help clean the coach. Harry use to give us sweets. Long time ago but I will never forget RIP Harry Shaw.

Windsor Monks: RIP H, had 50 plus years of friendship with a great man god bless.

Jody Line: Ahhh RIP Mr Harry Shaw I remember growing up and you did the kids Christmas parties at the Ansty club and then had the honour of working for you when I left school and went into travel.

Ian Sanderson: Great memories in Paris where Jayne and I got engaged. R.I.P Harry.

Martin Whinmill: RIP Harry, Top man. Used the Murco where I worked, in the summer would bring ice cream in for us.

Nikki Kelly: RIP Harry Shaw. So many day trips with my Dad who sadly passed away last year. Will always remember going on the coach when I was little. Thank Harry for making them good memories happen. Xxx.

Nigel Quinlan: Harry Shaw gave me the best holiday of my life FREE in the south of France, late 80s, we were first in the queue and sat at the Bedworth branch for 36 hours to be the first through the door with my mate Dean Smith, true to their word, we got the holiday absolutely free and a free glass of champagne and tv crews awaited us as we entered.

Martin Osborne: Harry was one of the nicest guys I’ve had the privilege of knowing. Rip H.

Alison Scholes: Wonderful man to work for he used to bring us bunches of flowers, cauliflower and broccoli from his farm. RIP Harry.

Stephanie Ridler: Gave me my first job aged 16... such a lovely man.x.

The funeral of Harry Shaw will take place at St Bartholomew’s Church, in Binley, on Wednesday, November 21, from 1pm.
