Sky Blue family come to the aid of elderly fan

CITY SUPPORTERS UNITE IN AID OF ‘ELDERLY AND ISOLATED FOOTBALL FAN’

- By BEN ECCLESTON

SKY Blues fans have shown the football family always sticks together and will help their own.

A plea went out from Hope Coventry Churches calling for Coventry City supporters who could come to the aid of an “elderly isolated gentleman” who is a “huge football fan”.

The church account says he would love a visit from somebody to chat about football at his home in Potters Green and urged anyone who was willing to step up to the plate to come forward.

And the response was swift and heartwarming, with a number of the Sky Blues volunteering their time to meet the man involved and even take him to a game at the Ricoh Arena.

The very first to reply was Moz Baker, chairman of the Sky Blue Trust, who said: “Always happy to chat football. Will happily pop round if it helps.” Other fans who got in touch with Hope Churches, including CCFC season ticket holders, offered to take the gentleman, who is in his 70s or 80s, to a game as well as arranging transport.

Joey Brannigan also offered to visit the man, who is originally from India, to give him a match report following a Coventry City game.

Jess Day-Pollard, Hope Churches’ Good Neighbourhood Coventry project manager, said: “We were surprised [by the reaction]. We use both Facebook and Twitter for advertising this sort of thing and only do so when we haven’t been able to find someone.

“We’ve had some successes on Facebook, but this on Twitter was a first.

“We’ve spoken to the elderly guy and he’s not really well enough to go to the games, but we’ve had some people get in touch about longerterm friendship, so hopefully at least one of those will come through.”
