Fans react over Cov City open letter

SOME fans have reacted angrily to an open letter published by Coventry City which said the club faced “devastating” consequences if a rent deal could not be agreed with landlord Wasps.

The owners of the Ricoh Arena have repeatedly said they will not enter a negotiation over the football club’s tenancy while its owners continue legal action against them.

Last week a further application for an appeal was lodged by the football club’s owners at the Supreme Court over a judicial review into the stadium sale.

And the football club has claimed the English Football League (EFL) will not allow City to play in the league next season unless playing in Coventry.

In the letter the club called for all parties to come together to find a positive resolution.

And it said the consequences of failure in that endeavour would be disastrous for the club, its fans and local community.

But fans reacted to the letter with anger, with many pointing the finger of blame at the club and its owners for persisting with legal action against Wasps.

On the Coventry Live Coventry City Facebook page Roland Payne said: “The answer is clear; Sisu stand down. End of.”

Responding to the letter’s claim negotiations could continue despite legal action, Giles Hudson said: “Er, no it can’t and indeed shouldn’t. Wasps bailed CCFC out previously at the end of a rental contract by giving them a year’s extension to sort their act out. they said at the time though that they would not repeat that offer again this year. Well said Wasps.

“I’ve been a Cov fan for nearly 50 years, but would implore Wasps to stick to their guns and refuse to enter talks until any current or future planned suits and appeals by Sisu are seen to be dropped.

“If the worst came to the worst, one might even look at it as a blessing in disguise, as we’ve been trying to get rid of Sisu for years.”

Adam Gelfs said: “The problem and the solution rests firmly with Sisu. It is in their power to act but instead they blindly head on to another defeat in court and destruction of the club.”

Mark Tucker said simply: “Stop the court cases and we will have a stadium and a football club.”

On Twitter Anthony Hornsby said: “All are at fault for this. Mainly SISU, certainly the council and perhaps also Wasps. SISU: Should never have played the tactics to get us in this position. Council: Should never have allowed #CCFC to become a prisoner in its own home. Wasps: Opportunists.”

Paul C said: “Said it before, say it again. Why don’t SISU proactively offer to cover Wasps legal costs if they lose this appeal, in exchange for Wasps agreeing a deal.”
