THE delivery driver who clung to the windscreen of his van and was then thrown off as robbers stole the vehicle remains in hospital in a critical condition.

However, it is understood the victim has woken from a coma and has been able to hold his wife’s hand.

Oleg Madan was delivering parcels for Amazon in Coventry on Monday, November 19, when robbers stole his white Transit-style van.

The vanjacking happened in the Stoke area of the city and a video of the incident was filmed and uploaded to Facebook showing Mr Madan’s desperate efforts to cling to the van and his screams for help as the van sped off.

Police were called to the junction of Caludon Road and Swan Lane after the driver was eventually thrown off the van and suffered life-threatening injuries.

He has been in hospital ever since and was in a coma for some time.

The news of the incident that left Mr Madan fighting for his life left fellow delivery drivers angry, but also wanting to know of any progress.

And a post on the Amazon Deliver Drivers UK Facebook page last week stated that “Oleg woke up today, he recognised his wife and held her hand”.

A fundraising page was also set up to support Mr Madan and his family and has since raised over £3,000.

The creator of the page states: “Mr Oleg Madan is a delivery driver, he fought back when his van was stolen in Coventry on 19th Nov 2018, he held on to the windscreen and bonnet while the vehicle was driven off at speed, he eventually fell off causing him life threatening injuries.

“As we speak he is in intensive care with his family around him. I want to raise money for him to hopefully assist him if he gets through this terrible incident.

“Please help me and support Oleg and his family by donating anything you have spare.”

So far there have been almost 130 donations, raising £3,202. In the aftermath of the incident, a spokesman for NGC Logistics, the third party company Mr Madan was employed by, said: “This was a terrible incident and our thoughts are with the driver and his family.

“We encourage anyone who saw what happened to contact the police.”

A spokesman for Amazon added: “Our thoughts are with the driver and his loved ones and we encourage any witnesses to the incident to contact the police.”

Detectives from West Midlands Police investigating put out repeated appeals for information at the time of the incident.

The white van was found burnt out in Lentons Lane after the incident. Police have recovered it and forensic tests are being carried out in a bid to catch those responsible.

Detective Sergeant Andy Malin, from West Midlands Police CID, previously said: “We are currently analysing video and CCTV footage and have spoken to a witnesses but are still urging anyone with information to get in touch.

“A man, who was just going about his daily job has been left seriously injured, it’s important that we find who is responsible as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police.
