Council already has an official civic flag

-

I WRITE in response to the letter from P Alders ‘Coventry flag is an insult to HMS Coventry crew’ (Dec 11).

Coventry City Council has not commissioned this flag. This was the initiative of BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio’s Vic Minett who encouraged designs from members of the public.

The designs were then shortlisted and the winning design was voted for by Coventry residents – all of which has been well publicised within the Coventry Telegraph.

Contrary to what Mr Alders states, the flag has not been formally adopted by the city council. The council has a red and green civic flag, which can be traced back to the 15th century and is flown on the front of the Mayoral car today.

It has been used by the city and Lord Mayors for hundreds of years and this will continue to be the case. Councillor George Duggins Leader of Coventry City Council

Letter to fans is fooling nobody

WHAT an embarrassing letter from CCFC to its supporters (Dec 7). So embarrassing in fact, that seemingly no one will put their name to it. After years of treating their fans with utter contempt, they now seem to think that the people of Coventry and Warwickshire are gullible fools. They cite the council’s minutes from 2014 and seem to think that the assurances then given should be unequivocal and unstinting, whilst their owners have always acted in a selfish manner often at odds with the football club and its fans. CCFC cannot seek to distance itself from their owner’s action, as they have recently been trying to do. If SISU have nothing to do with the football club, then why should they have any claims on the stadium?

It is laughable that they should play the role of innocent victims and talk about the devastating loss that the club would be to the city. We are all acutely aware of that.

Wasps and the council have made their position clear. Stop the legal action, then you can negotiate. The implied devastation is in your hands. The ball is in your court and the clock is ticking. Mark Newbold Tile Hill

Voting system left Brexit in a mess

I AM writing in response to Mr Wheway’s letter from the Coventry Lib Dems.

He says the underlying bigotry of UKIP has forced Nigel Farage to resign. It was Nigel Farage himself who said that UKIP would become the party of the working class. It is actually the Lib Dems who are perpetuating bigotry whilst their numbers in Parliament have collapsed.

UKIP has yet to effectively break through the barrier of the first past the post system and Brexit is in a mess simply because of this.

UKIP is still the only party that believes in Brexit and our membership is still increasing but that is not enough to make Brexit happen. UKIP has had a plan to leave the EU for as long as it has existed as a party and it was written by the current party leader, Gerard Batten. The underlying bigotry of the political and media establishment will make sure Brexit doesn’t happen because they do not respect the will of the people. Ian A Rogers Coventry UKIP

Shoppers’ support for world farming

A HUGE thank you to the people of Rugby.

Local volunteers took to the streets of Rugby on December 1, 2018 to raise money for Compassion in World Farming, Britain’s leading farm animal welfare organisation.

The £112.89 raised will enable Compassion In World Farming to continue to campaign for increased standards of farm animal welfare. Samantha Hancock Compassion In World Farming

Marching in London to make our point

I, ALONG with many thousands, went to London on Sunday to march to leave.

It was a UKIP protest; I’m not with UKIP but with many senior people. Some of us on mobility scooters, we made our point. Since being in, the EU has destroyed Coventry.

The industry that has gone is unbelievable: Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Peugeot, Triumph Cars, Morris Engines, Courtaulds, Massy Ferguson, Wickman Machine Tools, Renold Chain, Brico, Dunlop, Motor Panels, GEC, Alfred Herbert’s machine tools and coal mines.

All these factories made thousands of jobs for the people of this country. Plus all other small factories that made parts for these companies. This is something that a lot of people in this country have forgotten – that’s why Coventry voted out. This is why the UK voted out. Central and local governments don’t care, that’s why.

I say to Theresa May, we voted leave – leave now. Eugene Austin Aldermans Green

Best case scenario? Brexit is cancelled

FRED Foster of Radford asks if the Bank of England could produce a best case prediction for Brexit (Dec 8). The simple answer is the best case scenario is Brexit is cancelled and we remain in the EU. John Reynolds Finham
