Heartless thieves steal two vital vans from city charity

DESPICABLE criminals have hit a Coventry charity that cares for terminally ill people.

Staff at Myton Hospice have been left devastated after two vans were stolen from its distribution centre in Binley in the space of two weeks.

The first happened on the evening of Thursday, December 6, and thieves then returned for a second vehicle on Saturday, December 15.

A statement from Myton Hospice said: “We normally have four vans at our disposal to transfer stock between our 25 shops and to pick up or deliver large items and furniture to and from supporters’ houses.

“Sadly, the two thefts have left our distribution centre team unable to meet the demand for new stock and collect donations at the busiest time of year.

“While it is incredibly upsetting that thieves would target a charity, let alone at Christmas, we are so thankful for the support we have received since the news of the thefts broke.

“It is a lovely reminder of the love people in Coventry and Warwickshire have for Myton, and the incredible generosity of members of the public and local businesses.

“We want to thank everyone who has been so supportive at this time and offered to help us we cannot name everyone but we are so grateful to all of you.”

The charity also said that anyone wanting to donate goods should take them directly to one of Myton’s shops in the region.

Anyone with information on the van thefts is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 or contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org. THE world’s most famous nanny swept into cinemas across the country yesterday, triggering a frantic festive battle to become the biggest film of 2018.

Mary Poppins Returns, which stars Emily Blunt in the title role, is expected to make millions in ticket sales over Christmas. But the film has to outperform a string of blockbusters in order to top the box office chart.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently the UK’s biggest film of 2018, having taken an enormous £70.8 million In second place is Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with £65.6 million, followed by Incredibles 2 (£56.1 million), Black Panther (£50.6 million) and Bohemian Rhapsody (£45.1 million).

All figures are correct up to December 16, and have been compiled for the Press Association by the British Film Institute (BFI).

MARY Poppins Returns would need to take about £6.5 million each day in order to be sure of topping the chart. But even if it does not manage to make number one by New Year’s Eve, the film still has a chance of ending up the biggest filmto be released in the UK.
