Football Shrews aim to rub salt in City wounds

- By SHANE IRELAND Football Writer Shrewsbury Town boss Sam Ricketts

“ATTACK” will be very much the order of the day for Shrewsbury Town against Coventry City today, midfielder Greg Docherty has revealed.

The Shrews, on the hunt for their first victory in three League One games, want to capitalise on City’s winless run and extend it even further.

Mark Robins’ side haven’t emerged from a match with three points since the 2-1 success over Doncaster Rovers in October.

And Docherty says his side intend to go on the front foot from the off.

“They will be desperate to get the win,” the 22-year-old on loan from Rangers told shrewsburytown.com. “They have a few ex-Shrewsbury players as well.

“At home we have to take the initiative to them and capitalise on their poor form, so to speak.

“If we get an early goal, maybe we can kill the game off, which we didn’t do last time [against Peterborough United].

“We have to be a bit more ruthless and go and make sure we get the three points.

“We will have good support. We have to just worry about us and go into the game full of confidence that we will get the points.”

Docherty was on the scoresheet at home to Peterborough last weekend but Shrewsbury were pegged back by a late equaliser. Sam Ricketts’ men twice went ahead but couldn’t hold on for the win as Ryan Tafazolli bagged an injury-time leveller for Posh.

“Yeah, it was disappointing,” added Doherty. “You could say the point was deserved overall.

“We knew Peterborough are strong away from home, but our home form is strong as well.

“To get in a winning position and keep it for so long, we should have killed the game off. Unfortunately late goals happen in football sometimes and you have to just take the positives and just move on to the next week.

“The game did feel like a defeat for a while, with how we conceded so late on. As the week passes and you look at the game and you pick up the positives from the game.

“There is always room for improvement. I think that’s the main thing and we move onto Saturday now full of confidence.”
