Football Liam is unluckiest player I’ve ever known - Robins

MARK Robins has branded Coventry City’s Liam Kelly as the unluckiest player he has ever known.

Sky Blues fans are anxiously waiting for news on the influential midfielder whom the manager says has been “magnificent” since coming in for Michael Doyle in the middle of the park.

Kelly has been in the wars in recent games, his latest injury coming 12 minutes from time at Wycombe Wanderers when he fell on his left elbow, suffering a suspected cracked bone.

He was taken off to hospital for an X-ray and, if confirmed, could result in the 28-year-old being out for several weeks.

“He’s landed on it and knowing him he’s probably done something that’s never been known before,” said Robins. “He’s just the most unlucky player I have ever known and I am just hoping he hasn’t done anything that’s too bad.

“Honestly, I can’t believe it because his ankle was blown up and puffy because he went over on it at the end of the game against Southend so I thought he’d miss the game. He’s had stitches because Doyler has butted him in his first challenge so he’s got a ripped open eye – his eye’s all over the place – and then he’s fallen on his elbow going for something else and just lands awkwardly. I just don’t get it! He just goes for everything but he’s been absolutely pivotal. He’s been unbelievable. He’s had the armband while Doyler has been out and he’s been magnificent so I just hope, for him and for us, that it isn’t anything too serious.”

Kelly missed the start of the campaign after suffering a pre-season injury setback and has been limited to 15 appearances so far this term, finally getting a run in the side in recent weeks.

“We hardly saw him in the first half of the season because of injury and he’s just getting himself going and getting his rhythm back and he’s been magnificent in there,” said the manager.

“So I am hoping he isn’t going to be a long-term miss for us.”
