COVENTRY City defender Chris Camwell looks to be heading back to the club after failing to earn a contract with League Two MK Dons.

The Sky Blues Academy graduate was given permission by manager Mark Robins to go on trial at Stadium:MK and has spent the last week or so training with Paul Tisdale’s squad.

However, it is believed the Dons will not be continuing their interest in the player who was hoping to join initially to provide cover at left wingback.

Camwell has fallen down the pecking order for City this season following the arrival of Sam McCallum in the summer. He played 90 minutes in Dons U-23s’ 2-2 draw with Peterborough in the Central Development League this week but it is understood Tisdale is no longer interested in adding the defender this month. Robins had warned his opposite number Tisdale that Camwell, who is contracted at the Ricoh Arena until June 2021, would not be leaving for free.

“They are looking for someone to play understudy for left wing-back but it has to be right,” Robins said.

“It has to be right for us because they can’t just come and nick players for nothing. At the end of the day the lad needs to develop, there’s no doubt about it, and we have done quite a lot of work with Chris and he certainly won’t be given away for nothing.” Camwell was handed his senior

league debut by Robins at the end of the 2016-17 season, earning rave reviews for his display against Scunthorpe United. The attacking left-back was strongly linked with interest from then Premier League Stoke City that summer but opted to sign a new, long-term contract at the Ricoh Arena.

He made two further first team appearances last season in the EFL Cup and Checkatrade Trophy and this season featured twice in the Trophy against Arsenal Under-21s and Forest Green. Camwell again earned glowing praise for his first-half display against the young Gunners due to his outstanding left-foot deliveries from open play and set-pieces, prompting Robins to say: “With the ball and in possession we’ve got somebody with unbelievable technique.”
