Jailhouse shocker

PICK OF THE DAY

- With Sara Wallis This is a warts-and-all look at life in a women’s prison Kim is fascinated by Vanessa’s baby-bump Channel 5, 10pm

IF YOU thought the drama Orange Is The New Black was violent and shocking, this is the real thing. Some of America’s most dangerous women are locked up in the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Centre. They are in for everything from drug trafficking and armed robbery, to gang violence and murder.

Life at the prison is explosive to say the least, with constant battles, rivalries and threats.

This fascinating series promises to show glimpses of the women’s softer sides, too, but mostly it’s a jaw-dropping look at the volatile life for these criminals.

Notorious inmate Victoria Diaz, known as Baby D, considers herself to be the top dog, with the ability to place hits on fellow prisoners.

She says: “I can be nice, but if I don’t like you I can be rude as hell.

“And violent. You gotta do what you gotta do.”

Victoria, 21, is in on a charge of breaking and entering and assault and battery after attacking her ex who she claims was cheating with her best friend.

Admitting she has a problem with violence, she sets her sights on fellow inmate Krystal, threatening a revenge attack. It’s up to the guards to try to keep Krystal safe.

Meanwhile, India is making a tidy profit selling treats to her fellow inmates for whopping interest rates.

And heroin addict Vanessa is eight months pregnant and needs to get out of jail in time to keep her baby.

“My first was born addicted to heroin,” she says. “It’s the hold that addiction has on you.”
