Volunteering for Myton boosted my confidence

- By IZZY SANDERS

BECOMING a volunteer at one of the Myton Hospice’s shops is a great way to meet new people, gain experience and support your local charity.

We spoke to Jess Hanson, manager at the Wellesbourne shop, about her journey from volunteer to manager. How did you progress from retail volunteer to manager? I started as a retail volunteer for Acorns then I became a relief worker there. I was an assistant manager for an Air Ambulance charity shop and have been with Myton as a manager since July 2018. Why did you become a volunteer?

My confidence was so low I could barely hold a conversation but the Job Centre said they had an idea to help me - becoming a charity retail volunteer. Right from my first day I loved it and within 6 months my confidence was higher than it had ever been. What would you say to someone who was thinking about becoming a volunteer? It was one of the scariest things I ever did but I would say we don’t throw anyone in at the deep end; you learn at your own pace, it is fun and you’re doing something worthwhile. It can be a hard first step but we’re like a family and welcome everyone in.

We are looking for people for a variety of roles across our 25 shops including key volunteers, stock sorting volunteers, social media volunteers, visual merchandising volunteers and sales assistant volunteers.

So whatever your interests we have something for you! We are also looking for volunteers for our distribution centre to sort and process donations. Visit www. mytonhospice.org/volunteering.

As well as volunteering roles we have some vacancies for paid shop managers and assistant managers at our Nuneaton shop and our new Stratford Upon Avon store opening soon – visit www. mytonhospice.org/vacancies for details.
