RUBEN Lameiras admits he was fired up against his former club Coventry City but more motivated by helping relegation battlers Plymouth Argyle get three points.

The ex-Sky Blues forward, who was released by manager Mark Robins after the club dropped out of League One in 2017, bagged a second half brace to overturn an opening wonder strike from Conor Chaplin that gave City the lead at Home Park.

“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bit different but I had to keep my professional head on,” said the 24-year-old (pictured), who was determined not to let any emotions get the better of him.

“I had to just take it as another game and make sure that I was in a good mental space for the team, which I think I got correct today.

“I’m enjoying my football at the moment, which is the main thing. It’s not about me.

“It was about the performance really. We knew if we put back-to-back wins together, at the weekend and hopefully on Tuesday (against Walsall at Home Park), where that could catapult us in the league.

“That was the main thing going through my head, not about the team we were playing against and who it was.

“It was more about get three points and see where it takes us.”

Although delighted to be the match winner, Lameiras revealed he has no hard feelings towards his former club, whom he helped lift the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley.

“I went there, not as a baby but as a very young lad,” said the flair player, whose brace took his recent red hot run to six goals in his last four games, bumping his overall season tally to ten.

“We had four or five different managers so it was a bit rocky.

“There were things going on behind-the-scenes that maybe didn’t help the club at all.

“But I have still got a lot of love for that club. There are so many staff, the players, the people behind closed doors that really make it a wonderful club.

“I have got nothing but good things to say about the place.”
