Fantastic four set for battle to be crowned king of Coventry

-

THE king of Coventry boxing will be crowned next month.

Marc Dwyer has brought together four of the city’s top fighters for a ‘Fantastic Four Prizefighter’ tournament at the Sports Connexion on Saturday, March 23.

The semi-final draw has been made and Shane Normoyle will meet Chris Masterson, while James Flinn (pictured) and Sean McKervey collide in the other semi-final over three, three-minute rounds.

The winners clash in the final at the end of the night. City fight fans have waited for years to see Flinn and McKervey meet. They were scheduled to fight in September, 2011 in a clash that was sure to sell out Bedworth Civic Hall – until McKervey was cut in sparring.

There was talk of them clashing again a couple of years later, but McKervey retired having won British Masters and Midlands Area honours in his 13-fight pro career. Flinn challenged for English welterweight honours as a pro after boxing at a good level in the amateurs with Triumph, reaching the ABA semifinals and a Welsh final. Normoyle and Masterson are also well known to city fight fans. Normoyle is an all-action scrapper who boxed for Bell Green as an amateur before a brief professional career.

He made his paid debut at the Skydome in April, 2010 and was unlucky to have to settle for a draw with Vinny Woolford.

Normoyle followed that with a points win over Lester Walsh.

In Masterson, he faces a fighter who won schoolboy honours as an amateur before drifting away from the sport.

Masterson returned to the unlicensed circuit last year.

Dwyer expects there to be 12 other fights and tickets are available from www.marcdwyerboxing.co.uk
