Ricoh row: EFL talks on future of Cov City

- By KATY HALLAM Chief Reporter

THE English Football League has held a meeting to discuss the future of Coventry City Football Club at the Ricoh Arena.

The uncertain future currently facing the club was on the agenda of the EFL’s board meeting on February 7.

But those involved are staying tight-lipped on the outcome.

A spokesman for the League said no details would be released from the meeting as the “matter is ongoing”.

The club has said it remains in “regular dialogue with the EFL regarding the club’s future”.

Coventry City has just 80 days until its final match of the season at the Ricoh. The current rent deal allowing them to play at the stadium ends in May.

Wasps, who own the stadium, have said they will not enter into discussions to extend it until legal action involving Sisu-related companies and Coventry City Council surrounding the sale of the stadium in 2014 ends.

And bosses at the club have said the English Football League has told them they will not be allowed to play at a ground outside the city next season - casting doubt on whether the club will collapse altogether.

A spokesman for Coventry City Football Club said: “Coventry City Football Club is aware that the EFL Board is meeting today, and that the future of the Football Club is on the agenda to be discussed. We remain in regular dialogue with the EFL regarding the club’s future.”

Behind the scenes, more talks are being arranged to try and solve the impasse.

The Sky Blue Trust fans’ group met with senior councillors and officers from Coventry City Council earlier this week to discuss the ongoing wrangle.

MPs debated the issue in Westminster last month, with Jim Cunningham, MP for Coventry South, saying he was requesting meetings with the EFL and urging more mediation talks to take place between the key players in the long-running legal action.
