Mum’s plea after second road incident near school

- By LAURA HARTLEY News Reporter

A MUM has spoken out after her son was hit by a car - the second incident in just over a week where a child has been hit by a vehicle near a school.

The latest incident happened on Tuesday (February 12) around 3.30pm when children were coming out of Manor Park Primary in Cheylesmore.

The boy, who was crossing the road to his mum at the time, “bounced” off the front of the taxi and fell into his mum’s arms.

The mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she wants something positive to come out of a negative situation.

She said her son suffered bruises but luckily wasn’t seriously injured.

She said: “My son was coming out of the school gates with his friend.

“A car was parked on the yellow zig zags so he carefully edged out in the road to try and look around the car.

“I was stood just across the road from him, so could see that he was being careful.

“He came towards me and as he did the taxi just appeared.

“The driver slammed his brakes on but other parents told me you could hear the screeches from the tyres from down the road.

“My son bounced of the front grill of the taxi and managed to carry on running to me and fell into my arms.

“It all happened so quickly and seemed to go on forever.

“He hasn’t got any serious injuries, but is suffering with shock and wouldn’t even cross our road.

“I’m not going in on the school, or the taxi driver, but something needs to be done.”

The mum is hoping to get parking buddies installed which will help drivers slow down and be more mindful of their speed.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up to raise money for ‘parking buddies’ which are cut out images of children and police officers which can be set up outside schools.

The mum added: “We are looking to purchase, initially, eight parking buddies which will be placed outside school during the day.

“Hopefully people will take notice of these and slow down.

“I want a positive outcome for something negative that has happened.”

The latest incident was the second outside Manor Park Primary in just over a week.

The first incident involved a child hit by a car near the school after a car mounted the pavement.

Emma Darwood told the Telegraph she rang police after the incident outside Manor Park Primary School in Cheylesmore on February 4.

She said the car mounted the path and injured her son, 11-yearold Joseph, as he waited to cross the road at home time.

Emma said: “He was waiting to cross the road outside school when a car mounted the pavement and ran over his foot, and then has driven off.

“Do you not think you should stop if you do that? You shouldn’t be on the road if that’s how you are going to be.”

She said that Joseph was “in shock” about what happened and she took him to hospital, but fortunately he had no broken bones.
