Shoplifter caught trying to steal 15 bottles of vodka

A SHOPLIFTER was caught stealing £240 worth of vodka from a city supermarke­t - at the age of 66.

Pensioner Robert Wilshire tried his best to get away with 15 bottles of vodka from Morrisons but was caught in the act.

He was charged in connection with the incident on October 18 last year and Wilshire, of Heera Close, Foleshill, admitted the theft when he appeared at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to provide a sample for drug testing.

The punishment deemed suitable for his crimes by magistrate­s was a community order with a rehabilita­tion activity requiremen­t and a fine of £80.

On top of that he was made to pay £135 towards the courts costs and an £85 victim surcharge, which goes toward supporting victims of crime.

Other cases heard at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court between February 4 and 5 included:

Islaan Mahmood, 21, of Beresford Avenue, Foleshill, admitted possession of an offensive weapon (extendable baton) in Burges. He was given a community order with 40 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £185 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Robinson Ngongban, 38, of no fixed address, admitted driving while disqualifi­ed, failing to provide a specimen and driving without insurance. He was sent to prison for 12 weeks, banned from driving for four years and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Vijay Ganger, 29, of Broad Street, Foleshill, admitted drug-driving in Bedworth, driving without insurance and possession of cannabis. He was banned from driving for 14 months, fined £140 and ordered to pay £135 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Fisto Nathoma, 40, of Dunrose Close, Stoke Hill, admitted failing to provide a specimen, driving while disqualifi­ed and driving without insurance. He was sent to prison for 20 weeks due to “flagrant disregard for court orders”, banned from driving for five years, fined £115 and ordered to pay £135 court costs.

Mahfoozur Ahmed, 46, of Smith Street, Foleshill, admitted drink-driving in Stoney Stanton Road (breath 154, limit 35). He was sent to prison for 16 weeks due to fourth offence of drink-driving and an accident was caused, banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Arvinder Rai, 27, of Blackberry Lane, Stoke Heath, admitted stealing an iPhone X worth £750 and fraud by false representa­tion by trying to claim ownership of the stolen phone. He was given a community order including 180 hours unpaid work and a sixweek curfew with an electronic tag from 9pm7am and ordered to pay £375 compensati­on and £288 court costs.
