Taking Stock

DAVID Stockdale has issued what appears to be a parting message to Coventry City, thanking the club and fans for making him feel so welcome during his emergency loan spell.

But it has emerged that the 33-year-old remains on standby for Sunday’s trip to League One table toppers Luton Town.

Blues stopper Stockdale was drafted in ahead of the trip to Rochdale after first-choice keeper Lee Burge was ruled out with a shoulder injury following a collision in the previous match against Gillingham.

The experienced Championship star has earned rave reviews for his two performances for the Sky Blues when he has kept backto-back clean sheets against the Dale last week and Midland rivals Walsall on Saturday.

It has been his commanding presence that has caught the eye and ears - his booming voice organising the back four brilliantly.

Added to that has been an impressive display of kicking from the keeper who has clearly instilled confidence in the team to claim consecutive victories and bring an end to a five-game winless run.

Manager Mark Robins enthused after the weekend’s 3-0 win over Walsall: “He’s a proper goalkeeper. He has a lot of experience and plays at a higher level and commands the area and his kicking is good.”

Stockdale tweeted what appeared to be a farewell message on Sunday, saying: “Thanks for all of the Coventry City people for making me feel welcome. Loved my time. What a great talented team and staff.

“Was my pleasure to wear the shirt. All the best.”

However, Stockdale remains on call this week.

The first-team squad, who don’t play until Sunday, had the day off yesterday and it’s understood Burge’s fitness will be assessed when the players return for training at Ryton today.

And if the 26-year-old is still struggling with his injury then Stockdale will be in line to stay with City for a third emergency loan week and will rejoin the team to prepare for the televised midday clash against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road.
