Blaze’s lack of power costly

-

FIFE Flyers skated away from the Skydome Arena with a 3-2 victory over the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze.

Brett Bulmer was first to beat Blaze netminder Matt Hackett with a smart finish one-on-one (1.18). Croatian defenceman Ivan Puzic and Flyers’ Danick Gauthier then each received five minutes for fighting.

Fife added a second with a five-onthree advantage Carlo Finnuci scoring at 17.30.

Blaze came out much sharper in the second period and their efforts were rewarded when Thom Flodqvist pulled one back (25.21).

Dillon Lawrence’s return from injury for Blaze was much welcomed, and even more so at 29.24 as the Canadian tied the game unassisted with his fifth of the year. He was later rewarded with the man-of-the-match award.

Powerplay chance after powerplay chance came for Coventry, but with the Fife penalty-kill remaining perfect, the second period buzzer sounded with the score tied at two.

With their second five-on-three goal of the night, Fife re-took the lead at 53.16 through Evan Bloodoff after Shawn Pauly had lost his stick on the play leaving Coventry with just two skaters.

With Blaze failing to take further powerplay opportunities, Fife were 3-2 victors leaving Danny Stewart’s side frustrated with a zero point weekend.

Stewart said: “There’s no need to over-analyse it. They got two five-onthree powerplay goals and our powerplay laid an egg and that’s the difference in the game.”
