A MACHETE was found in a Coventry street and another knife stumbled upon by children and their mum while walking to school in the city.

In total five knives were found in Coventry within three hours of each other and are now being examined to see if they are linked to any crimes.

The discoveries, all made by members of the public, come at a time when there have already been 10 stabbings in Coventry in 2019.

The most horrific-looking of the weapons - a serrated-edge machete was found in a street in the Holbrooks area. One of the knives was found in Wyken Nature Reserve by a woman walking to work.

Elsewhere a large kitchen knife was discovered hidden behind wheelie bins in Longford Road and while another was found by a resident in a bag in the garden of her Stoke home.

The fifth knife - which isn’t pictured - was stumbled upon by children and their mum while walking to school in the Wood End area.

They were all recovered by police between 8am and 11am on Monday, March 4, after being reported by members of the public.

They were all seized for forensic analysis to determine if they are linked to any reported crime.

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: “Everyone has a role to play in addressing the root causes of knife crime, including parents, teachers, social workers... indeed anyone who comes into contact with children and young people.

“We’re asking parents to speak to their children about the devastating impact of knife crime - the life-changing consequences - and not to be afraid to check their bags or rooms if they suspect they could be arming themselves with knives.

“We need to collectively drive out the culture of people feeling comfortable to carry knives or who are carrying one through a misguided perception it’s for their protection.”
