Man given chance to stay out of trouble is jailed

A MAN given a chance to step away from crime after growing cannabis in Coventry is now behind bars - after being caught for a second time.

Mark Dixon was handed a suspended sentence in December for producing a quantity of cannabis, but was dragged back before the courts after police found he had done it again in February this year.

The 53-year-old, of Rutherglen Avenue, Whitley, pleaded guilty when he appeared at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court and was jailed for a total of 16 weeks.

The sentence was made up of four weeks imprisonme­nt for the new offence and 12 weeks on top imposed from the previous suspended sentence.

Other cases heard at Coventry Magistrate­s’ Court between March 7 and 12 included:

Darren Considine, 27, of no fixed address, admitted two counts of stealing razors worth £115 from Boots, stealing a Phllips shaver worth £56 from Boots, stealing groceries worth £33 from One Stop and stealing goods worth £17 from Wilko. He was given a community order including a drug rehabilita­tion requiremen­t, fined £20 and ordered to pay £221 compensati­on and a £85 victim surcharge.

Jamie Spragg, 34, of Barsby Close, Atherstone, admitted two counts of stealing beef joints worth £274 from Aldi and failing to answer bail. He was given a community order including a 12-week curfew with an electronic tag from 8pm-8am and ordered to pay £274 compensati­on.

Tracey Morey, 39, of Pendenis Close, Courthouse Green, admitted assaulting a police officer by spitting on him, being drunk and disorderly in Stoney Stanton Road, and possession of cocaine and cannabis. She was given a community order including an alcohol treatment requiremen­t and ordered to pay £50 compensati­on to the police officer.

Gurnak Sangha, 49, of Barkers Butts Lane, Coundon, was found guilty of harassment by repeatedly following his victim. He was given 200 hours unpaid work, handed a restrainin­g order and ordered to pay £750 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Ashok Singhal, 53, of Foleshill Road, Foleshill, admitted drink-driving in Foleshill (breath 107, limit 35). He was banned from driving for 26 months, given 160 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £135 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

Lisa Donnelly, 31, of Heath Road, Stoke Heath, admitted stealing men’s socks worth £70 from TK Maxx, failing to provide a sample and failing to attend probation appointmen­ts. She was sent to prison for 22 weeks and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Hamza Afzal, 20, of Lewis Road, Foleshill, admitted possession of an offensive weapon (crossbow) in a public place. He was given 40 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £90 court costs and a £85 victim surcharge.
