First-class Droobers are getting ready for final challenge

LOCAL club Octavian Droobers were celebratin­g after their team won through to the final of the Compass Sport Cup.

Almost 80 club members were registered for a heat of the competitio­n held at Bentley Wood, near Atherstone.

The Compass Sport Cup is an annual championsh­ip between large clubs throughout England and Wales.

The Octavian Droobers excelled with many members winning their respective classes.

Club captain Alistair Powell was pleased with the result and said the club was looking forward to sending an even larger team to the final at Pippingfor­d Park, Crowboroug­h, in Sussex, on October 20. Top male performers for the club were Will Gardner (M21) – first in 45.44mins on the longest brown course – and Alistair Powell (M40) – first on the short brown course in 48.49mins.

Top female performers from the club were Amy Sarkies (W40) – winner on the blue women’s course and Lesley Ross (W50) – top runner on the green women’s course.

Barry Elkington (M60) was top on the green men’s course. On the veteran short green course Bob Brandon (M70) was first. Sheila Carey (W70) was the fastest runner on the super vet short green course.
