True grit is key to county’s win

-

AFTER a questionable start due to the weather Warwickshire ladies eventually set out for Littleport Bowling Club to meet Cambridgeshire for the next round of the Middle England League.

Although the rain stopped just before they arrived it was only until the match started, and from then on the players were subjected to a constant heavy drizzle.

Fortunately for Warwickshire their determination eventually proved too much for Cambridgeshire and they came away the victors with a score of 124-117 moving them to second in the league with three games to play.

Highest winning rink went to Sue Hornsby (Lillington) with Donna Kerr (RLS), Sharon Keal (Snitterfield) and Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) who were evenly matched with their opponents until the sixth end when they started to pull ahead. They were 15-6 up at ten ends when the tide turned again and they found themselves with only a five shot lead at 16 ends.

But a last-minute surge gave them the result they were after and they finished 28-13.

Pat Moore (Three Spires) with Antoinette Lambert (Ambleside), Linda Linney (Stratford) and Jacqui Cook (Lillington) just managed to hold on to finish with a 24-17 win.

Moira Parsons (Welford) with Velisa Brown (Southam), Pippa Mace (Lillington) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey) were never in any danger and also finished with a seven-shot win at 19-12.

Chris Cooke with Rosemarie Geden (both Southam), Di Medhurst (Stoke) and Liz Westell (Welford) saw disaster strike on the 20th end as they dropped five shots leaving them 24-21 down going into the last end. But a magnificent five shots on the last end not only gave them a 26-24 victory, but also ensured that Warwickshire won the game.

Warwickshire men travelled down to Clevedon BC to play Devon in the Middleton Cup, while both teams won three rinks it was Devon that came out on top winning 112-100 restricting the Bears to six out of 22 points.

Andy Prickett (Welford), Darren Ward (Rugby), Richard Brittan and Mark Ireland (both Erdington Court) saw a strong finish deliver a 21-9 victory. Martyn Murley (Nuneaton), Rob Robinson (Erdington Court), Matt Wells and Tom Millership (both Rugby) got off to a strong start eventually winning 26-15.

Adam Smith (Avenue Leamington), Keith Wooding (Avenue Coventry), Martin Heitzman and Andy Smith (Avenue Leamington) secured a 21-16 win. Andy Manning, Dave Fallon (both Nuneaton), Colin Jacox (Avenue Coventry) and Calvin Wells (Nuneaton) lost as did Jordan Ward, Brian Boardman (both Rugby), Steve Smith (Nuneaton) and Martin Timms (Welford).
