Love blossoms for the oldest newlyweds

LOVE really does know no age as Nuneaton register office is about to host a wedding for two of its oldest lovebirds.

Today Roy Button, aged 93 and Dorothy Moreton, aged 87, will tie the knot at the town’s register office – making them among the oldest to ever get married there.

But the couple’s love story spans back five decades.

“We first met 50 years ago, when I was with my first wife and Dorothy was with her husband,” said Roy, who is from the Attleborough area.

“We used to all go out and go on family holidays together to places like Blackpool and the Isle of Wight, our kids grew up together.”

The families kept in touch but drifted apart.

Roy, who used to work at Sterling Metals and a foundry in Bayton Road and served in the parachute regiment, sadly lost his first wife in 1996, re-married and then lost his second wife in 2017.

There was similar tragedy for Dorothy who, having been married to Trevor for 40 years, lost him nine years ago. She also sadly lost her two sons.

However, happiness was soon on the horizon for the couple because, just over 12 months ago, fate would bring Roy and Dorothy back together.

“We bumped into each other at the Abbeygate (shopping centre), he followed me round and then asked for my phone number and we went from that really,” Dorothy said.

They rekindled their friendship and it blossomed into love.

They started ballroom dancing together at the Attleborough Liberal club – that is where they will have their reception and their first dance will be extra special.

“It will be to the Last Waltz,” said Dorothy. “It was one of the first dances we learned together and we were dancing to it at Christmas when he said to me ‘let’s get married.’

“The words in it, ‘two lonely people together’ are perfect for us, we were both lonely and then found each other.”

Dorothy, who lost her husband Trevor nine years ago, said she did not expect to find love again.

“I never thought it would happen to me again,” she said.

“We found each other at the right time.”

Roy, who still does all the cooking, cleaning and DIY jobs, said: “I know people will say why bother getting married at our age but, why not? We might not have long left but we want to be together.”
